Blood Crystals, Bloodrage Charges, and when to use a Bloody Ritual vs a Frozen Ritual. Plus the S5 spawn and reward bugs that waste your charges.
Last Epoch Rage of Morditas: How to Farm It Right
Rage of Morditas is a two-phase kill timer that pays out in Bloodrage Charges, and every charge buys one action on a five-slot reward panel: claim a reward, or run a ritual. Twenty kills earns the first charge, two hundred earns the fifth, and every ritual also destroys the slot you cast it on. Bloody Ritual deletes an item type you are done with; Frozen Ritual forces the rest of the panel into the type you are chasing.
How a Blood Crystal encounter starts
It is a random encounter in Eterra. It can spawn in the Campaign as early as Chapter 2, and inside Echoes it appears as an interactable object, the Blood Crystal.
Two tells come before you commit: entering an area with one triggers "Anger is building up in the air," and the crystal shows on your mini-map as a blood ice shard. Nothing starts until you touch it, after which a non-corporeal Shade of Morditas attaches itself to you, urging you to kill as many enemies as possible. Blood vapor trails point at the nearest live enemy, so Phase 1 is routing, not hunting.

Phase 1: killing the timer, not the bar
A countdown runs on screen. Every kill extends it, and higher-rarity enemies grant larger extensions — but only so far, so slow single-target play drains it faster than fast wide clears.
Bloodrage Charges accumulate by raw kill count on the event meter under the mini-map: 20 kills for the first charge, 50 for the second, 90 for the third, 140 for the fourth, 200 for the fifth. Each charge also grants one of 28 Bloodrage buffs at random, lasting the whole encounter — Coalescing Rage, for example, spawns blood orbs around you that detonate when an enemy touches them.
Past 200 kills the timer drains rapidly and Phase 2 starts.
Phase 2 and the Blood-Filled Crystal
When the timer hits zero, Morditas fuses blood and ice magic and raises the Gauntlet of Blood and Ice — a ring of blood ice around you with every Phase 1 kill revived for one more pass. Leaving the combat area for four seconds ends Phase 2 early.
Clear it and the Blood-Filled Crystal materialises. Interacting opens the reward panel: five rewards, four equipment slots, and a fifth holding keys, crafting materials, bags of resources and similar utility. A dungeon key in slot 5 can beat the gear next to it, so do not spend charges blindly.
What one Bloodrage Charge actually buys
| Claim an item | Frozen Ritual (frost rune) | Bloody Ritual | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slots consumed | The claimed slot; panel refills to 5 new rewards | The selected slot is sacrificed | The selected slot is banished |
| Item types after | Fresh roll, any type | Remaining rewards reroll as that slot's item type | Remaining rewards reroll, and nothing of that type appears until you claim |
| Affixes | None | Higher chance of affixes like the original | No similarity guarantee |
| Rare / Exalted rewards | Whatever they rolled with | Ice Forging Potential | Blood Forging Potential |
Both rituals cost a slot as well as a charge, and both persist until you claim. Five charges, five slots, one slot burned per ritual means at most four rituals before a single slot remains — and that last charge has to buy the claim.

The five slots, slot by slot
| Slot | What is usually there | Claim it | Frozen Ritual on it | Bloody Ritual on it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Equipment in a type you want more of (say amulets) | Worth building around | Take the best roll, reroll the rest | Right tool: pins the panel to that type with similar affixes | Wrong tool: bans the type you wanted |
| A duplicate you already own (say a second two-handed axe) | Dead weight | Salvage or sell | Wasted slot | Right tool: that type is gone until you claim |
| Rare or Exalted you want to craft with | The real prize | Take it and stop | Fine if you want Ice FP | Fine if you want Blood FP |
| Junk blocking a better roll | Filler | Leave it only if nothing is better | Burns it | Burns it |
| Slot 5: keys, materials, resource bags | Often the best value here | The safest claim | Sacrifice documented, behaviour not | Same silence |
Ritual always sacrifices the selected slot, so never cast one on your final slot. One charge and one slot means take the item.
Which ritual to use: the decision rule
Decide on the slot, not the ritual. Find the item you care least about, then ask what the panel needs more of.
- Full of a type you already own or cannot use — Bloody Ritual on one of them. Banning a two-handed axe frees four slots to roll something new, and the ban holds until you claim.
- One item of the type and affixes you want — Frozen Ritual on it. Everything left becomes that type, with a better shot at repeating the affixes you liked.
- Chasing a Forging Potential — Frozen for Ice, Bloody for Blood; the one place the two differ only by which potential you get. Ice and Blood Forging Potential explained covers spending them.
- Two variant Uniques on the panel — Frozen on a different item re-rolls which variant affix the Unique carries, Bloody can add Legendary Potential or corrupt it. Both appear only after a full five-item refresh: Season 5's new Uniques.
These kills also build Morditas's Anger gauge, which unlocks his Echo chain.
Charges reset, the panel does not
Bloodrage Charges do not carry over to your next encounter, but your rewards stay the same between them. The panel only changes when you run a ritual or claim something.
A panel you like survives logging out or a separate encounter — bank it and come back. The charge budget does not: every new encounter rebuilds from that run's kill count.
Season 5 bugs that waste your charges
As of Hotfix 1.5.1.1 (2026-10-03), two of the four launch-week problems with this mechanic are fixed.
- Campaign crystals spawn mid-map with nothing to kill. A 2026-10-02 report: "At least 60% of all the events I encountered were midway through the map leaving barely any enemies." Monolith spawns, by contrast, sit right at the Echo start. No patch note addresses it, so farm these in Echoes.
- Gauntlets sometimes lacked the monsters needed to finish. Fixed in Hotfix 1.5.1.1, which also removed respawning Wolven Cocoons and Dusk Spiders.
- The reward menu vanished unexpectedly, sometimes before you selected anything, burning charges. Fixed in Hotfix 1.5.0.1 on 2026-10-01.
- Rewards need Resonances to gift. A player report says trading them to a co-op partner is impossible even in the same zone, while Nemesis, Rift Beast and Omen drops are giftable there. Still open, no developer reply as of 2026-10-03.
That hotfix also stopped RoM rewards and Portents of Blood corrupted items from appearing already ruined, which matters if you build your Weaver Tree around these encounters: Ubiquity of Rage puts them in your Echoes, and Seekers of Ice and Blood trades phase-2 enemy damage for denser RoM-only drops. The rest of launch week is in Season 5 bugs and hotfixes; the trading rules are in co-op: party size, scaling and invites.
FAQ
Do Bloodrage Charges carry over to the next encounter? No. Each run rebuilds from that run's kill count, topping out at five.
Do my rewards stay if I log out mid-panel? Yes. The panel persists between encounters and only changes on a ritual or a claim.
How many rituals can I run on one panel? At most four — each costs a charge and a slot, so the fifth action must be a claim.
Can I gift Blood Crystal rewards to a party member? Not without Resonances as of Hotfix 1.5.1.1, even in the same zone.
