How Last Epoch co-op works: party limits, how enemy scaling applies, and what changes when you play offline or in Season 5.
Last Epoch Multiplayer and Co-op: Party Size, Scaling, and Invites
Yes — Last Epoch has online co-op, and the Steam store page proves it: Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op and Online Co-op are all listed. Parties cap at 4 players including you, enemies scale on health only, and there is no console to crossplay with yet because PS5 is announced but not released. One Season 5 wrinkle bites: Blood Crystal reward items cannot be gifted or traded without Resonances, which quietly kills the "I'll farm it for you" plan.
(Checked October 3, 2026 — Patch 1.5.1.1.)
Can you play Last Epoch with friends?
Yes, but the model is closer to Diablo II than a shared open world: multiplayer is party-based and instanced, so you only encounter the people in your party. As one Steam discussion post from February 2024 puts it, "No randoms will be wandering the echoes of Eterra."
Official source: Last Epoch on Steam — features list Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op and Online Co-op.
Two conditions catch people out. Partying is Online-only; Offline characters can never group — the boundary Online vs Offline vs Legacy explains. And you can only party within the same game mode — hardcore with hardcore. No friendly fire.
How many players fit in a Last Epoch party?
Four, including yourself, in EHG's own words: "You will be able to be in a party of up to 4 players, including yourself."
Know where that sentence comes from. The Official Multiplayer FAQ thread opened on July 20, 2021 as a statement of plans while multiplayer was pre-release, and its last meaningful edit was March 9, 2023 — the day multiplayer left beta. It is pre-1.0 text, not a Season 5 one.
The fresh confirmation is indirect. In July 2026 a player asked for 5-player parties and EHG's Vandryll replied that raising the cap "is not in the current scope of the game right now" (July 13, 2026).
How does enemy scaling work in co-op?
Scaling touches enemy health and nothing else. The FAQ is short: "When additional party members join an area monster's health will scale up per party member. We are not planning to scale damage as this can be discouraging for players who have geared defensively for a solo experience."
The same February 2024 Steam thread adds the part players ask about most: "Only health values will be modified with this scaling level doesn't change... The damage dealt and the actual number of enemies does not increase with more players." A player summary, not a patch note — but it agrees.
| Changes when you group up | Does not change |
|---|---|
| Enemy health, scaled per party member | Enemy level — the zone's area level is fixed |
| — | Enemy damage, enemy count, drop rates |
EHG has never published a scaling percentage, so "170% at two players" is a player's estimate, not a spec — one 2024 thread claims 170% damage and health, another "0 scaling" at launch. Trust the health-only line.
What happens when your levels do not match?
Your experience rate tapers. The FAQ is explicit that "There is a cap on effective experience level of a zone. For example, a level 10 player in a level 20 zone will gain xp as if the enemies were level 13, not level 20. This does not affect the experience gained by other players." There is no down-scaling to match you to the zone — only an XP penalty for being under-level.
Levelling a friend is allowed on purpose: "We prioritize letting people play together over forcing players to go through every step of the story." The catch is quest rewards — skip ahead and you still have to go back and quest for passive points and idol slots, which matters when your friend is ahead on the Weaver Tree.
Can my friend give me their Season 5 loot?
Ordinary drops, yes. Loot is instanced — "only you will see the items that are dropped for you" — and anyone in your party when it dropped can Gift it.
Season 5's Blood Crystal rewards are the exception. On October 1, 2026 a player reported on the official forum that they could not gift Rage of Morditas items to a co-op partner because those rewards need Resonances, while regular boss drops are giftable without them in the same zone. That is player reporting, not a patch note, so treat the boundary as observed. Either way, chasing Ice or Blood forging potential is a solo or Resonance-having activity — see Rage of Morditas farming.

Does Last Epoch have crossplay?
Not in a way you can plan around. Steam's app data lists Windows only — no Mac, no Linux — so "crossplay" today reduces to "can my PC friend and I group up", which is yes:
| Platform | Status as of October 3, 2026 |
|---|---|
| PC / Steam (Windows) | Playable, online co-op live |
| PlayStation 5 | Announced, not released, no date |
| Xbox Series X|S | No official announcement found |
PS5 was announced alongside the first major expansion, Orobyss, with the post saying only that "Last Epoch is coming to PlayStation 5 AND is getting a major expansion" and that "we aren't ready to say much about what to see included or when." Game Director Moxjet200 later confirmed "there will be multiple seasonal releases before Last Epoch comes to PlayStation 5 with the Orobyss launch" (October 2025).
EHG has said nothing about PC/PS5 crossplay or shared saves. Orobyss is a free update for PC owners, a separate purchase for PS5 players — two installs, not a shared world.
How do you actually form a party?
The honest version: no official source documents the invite flow, and this guide will not invent a menu path — verify it in-game. What the patch notes do confirm is that the pieces exist: Patch 1.5 lists a Social panel among the movable side panels ("Stash, Character, Forge (Left), Inventory, Social (Right)"), and its fix list clears the party UI so "clicking a party member's portrait (for example, to teleport to them)" works.
On why group at all: "a party that is cooperating is slightly more efficient than a solo player and a disorganized party is slightly less efficient than a solo player" — and "we are not planning to incentivize parties with additional rewards." No content requires a party. The real gap is buff visibility: on October 3, 2026 a player asked for ally aura and Warcry visibility, unable to tell whether a buff reached a teammate or their minions.
Should you play co-op or solo in Season 5?
| If you want to… | Play | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Clear Blood Crystal, spend every Bloodrage charge | Solo | Resonances gate gifting the results |
| Push Pinnacle Morditas at 400 Corruption | Either | Extra health per body; under-level friends earn tapered XP |
| Farm Monolith stability and Echoes together | Party | Stability is credited per player's own run — nobody's progression is spent |
| Play through outages, or race for rankings | Solo | Grouping is Online-only; ranking wants a solo character |
