What you keep and lose in each mode, why True Offline is gone, and what Patch 1.5.1 changed for offline players.
Last Epoch Online vs Offline vs Legacy (Season 5)
Last Epoch runs three separate character worlds: Online characters live on the server and are the only ones eligible for seasonal rankings, trading and partying; Offline characters are local saves you can play with no connection; Legacy is where the characters from a finished season end up. What changed in Season 5 is not what Offline gives you — it is how you get into it. Since Patch 1.5, Full Offline mode is entered from the game's landing page, and the Steam launch option that used to be the documented route now just starts you Online.
Most "Offline is broken" reports trace back to that entry point rather than to the mode itself. The player launched Online.
The three modes at a glance
| Online | Offline | Legacy | |

What changed in Season 5: where Offline starts now
Before Patch 1.5, Full Offline mode was reached through a Steam launch option. The 1.5 notes state it plainly:
Moved the Full Offline mode to be accessible via the landing page after launching the game normally instead of needing to use a Steam launch option.
The pre-launch downtime notice in the same notes confirms the old route was still live right up until Season 5 launched on October 1 at 11 CDT 2026: "True Offline mode will continue to be available during this downtime through Steam launch settings."
On October 2, an EHG developer told a player the mode was gone: "'True offline' is being discontinued. You now connect to true offline via the regular game client." Six hours later, replying to a player who read that as a removal, the same developer corrected himself: "They didn't. If anything, it seems they discontinued false offline mode."
Read together: launch normally, pick Offline on the landing page, and the client works when you have no internet or the servers are down. Chat still reports that it connected but does not work, which is the biggest reason players think they entered the wrong mode. The in-game bug report tool now works too, which the developer counts as an upgrade.
The button still exists in Steam. A player wrote on October 3 that it "does nothing (in the sense that it launches the same as normal online mode)" — so you end up Online, with Online's bugs, believing you are playing offline.
What you lose in Offline, and the cosmetics oddity
The developer stated the rule in 2024 and it still holds: "Offline and online will have all the content. The differences are online-only features: chat, trade, grouping, leaderboards and cosmetics."
So you keep the Campaign, the Monolith of Fate, dungeons, crafting and Season 5's Rage of Morditas. What goes away is everything needing other players or a verified account state: the Bazaar and the Item Faction trade economy, prophecies other players complete for you, co-op parties, anything competitive. If your plan depends on buying gear rather than finding it, read what changed in Item Factions; if it depends on friends, see co-op party size and scaling.
Cosmetics are the strange case, and the reason is the very thing that makes Offline work. Asked whether an Ultimate Edition player's cosmetics were available offline, the developer answered: "That is because the players asked for a fully offline client that never connects to the servers after the first time. So the client doesn't know if you have them or not." A client that never phones home cannot check what your account owns.
The common 2024-era pitch was that Offline plays bug-free. As of Season 5 that is only half true.
Offline is no longer the bug-free mode
The long-standing community line was blunt: "No trade (in 1.0), no (internet-based) lag. There are fewer bugs in offline" (forum, January 2024). It still dodges the server-side failure class. But Patch 1.5 shipped offline-specific fixes of its own, including the quest tracker failing to display quests after leaving an Echo offline — Offline has its own defect surface rather than simply fewer bugs.
Season 5 widened that surface. In "Gamebreaking bugs in true offline mode S5" (October 2), a player with no internet reported two failures Online players were not seeing:
| Symptom | Detail | Status as of Hotfix 1.5.1.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Bloodrage charges read 5/5 in the quest panel but 0 in the Blood Crystal menu, so no reward can be claimed | Same character, on the 1.5 build | Unfixed — the 1.5.1.1 notes have no offline entry |
| Town portal does nothing at all | "Tried in mono, different campaign areas and across different chars, also season char or legacy makes no different" | Unfixed — no offline entry in 1.5.1.1 |
| Quest tracker blank after leaving an Echo offline | Shipped broken in 1.5 | Fixed in Patch 1.5 |
The charge desync is the expensive one, because it sits on the Season 5 reward loop: the charges register where the client can read them, and the reward panel then refuses to let you spend them. In how to farm Rage of Morditas properly that is the difference between a full five-charge panel and a wasted run.
The developer's own call on October 3 was to wait: "There are currently bugs with the offline version (when you don't have internet), though, so I'd wait for a hotfix." The rest of launch week is in Season 5 known bugs and hotfixes.

Legacy: what a finished season leaves you
Legacy is where characters from a season that has ended continue to live. No patch notes page defines the mode in one place as of 1.5.1.1; the clearest official description is a bug fix that names it. Hotfix 1.5.1.1 fixed "an issue where the Stash Dropdown and Merge button could be missing in Legacy for characters from a season that just ended."
That Merge button matters. Player documentation describes a button in the top-right of your stash that folds your season progression into your Legacy character, carrying gold, faction progress and keys across — without it, a returning player's faction rank looks like zero.
The bigger Season 5 change is access. Patch 1.5.1 states: "Pinnacle Morditas can now be challenged by Legacy and Offline characters." Before it, the season's pinnacle boss — the one gating the First Blood race — was closed to both. The unlock chain and the 400 Corruption requirement still apply; how to raise Corruption and the Morditas boss guide cover that side.
Can you move a character between modes?
No, in one direction, permanently. EHG's Mike was unambiguous in 2023: "offline playable characters will never be able to be moved to the online environment... It's not a matter of us figuring it out. It's not going to happen."
The reverse has stayed theoretical. Another developer said an Online-to-Offline move "shouldn't be an issue as long as it's a one way trip... though it wouldn't be anywhere near the top of priorities" — and neither the 1.5 nor the 1.5.1 notes announce it. No transfer feature exists as of Patch 1.5.1.1. You pick a mode when you create a character.
Which mode should you pick in Season 5
| If you want to… | Pick | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Play solo with unreliable internet, or care about outages | Offline | Trading, factions, partying, rankings, plus the Season 5 offline bugs above |
| Compete for First Blood or any seasonal ranking | Online | Offline flexibility; the race explicitly requires a Seasonal Online Character |
| Trade gear, run Item Factions, or play with friends | Online | Nothing beyond connection requirements |
| Keep levelling a Season 4 character | Legacy | No Season 5 progression, though Pinnacle Morditas opened in 1.5.1 |
| Kill Pinnacle Morditas | Online for the ranking; Legacy or Offline from 1.5.1 | You forfeit the race the moment you are not Seasonal Online |
FAQ
Can I play Last Epoch offline in Season 5? Yes. Launch normally and choose Offline on the landing page. It works with no internet or during a server outage.
Why doesn't my offline character show purchased cosmetics? The fully offline client never reconnects after first launch, so it cannot check what your account owns.
Can I transfer my online character to offline? Not as of Patch 1.5.1.1. Neither the 1.5 nor the 1.5.1 notes introduce it.
Is Legacy just Offline under another name? No. Legacy characters sit on your online account outside the current season and keep faction and stash progression you can merge into. Offline characters are local files that can never move online.
Is offline really less buggy? It avoids server-side problems but has its own. As of Hotfix 1.5.1.1 the Season 5 offline reports — desynced Bloodrage charges, dead town portal — are still open. The developer recommended waiting.
